I myself learned calculus in much the same way as it is This book definitely makes calculus easy, by presenting it with simple enough concepts that are then backed up by the mathematics needed to understand them. The book goes into some depth and talks about chain rule, product rule and the quotient rule in Differential Calculus. When I first found this book in the mid’s, I thought at first that it was one of those “made easy” trend books I had been seeing so much of. I really got a feel for how important it was for Thompson to remove the intimidation from calculus.


Gardner changes “fifth form boys” to the madf American sounding and gender neutral “high school students,” updates many now obsolescent mathematical notations or terms, and uses American decimal dollars and cents in currency examples.

No wonder many people still look at math students as possessing a form of ‘genius’ that is both threatening and alienating at the same time. The original book can be obtained free from gutenberg. It turned out to not be at all siilvanus I’m looking for yet I am rating it 5 stars!

This preface helps you understand more of the world of calculus. I reread the text a few times and worked out most of the problems and feel I now understand calculus well enough to appreciate its significance and genius. Silvanus Thompson did an amazing job with explaining a possibly complicated subject with great detail and made each point crystal clear.

I should emphasise that the edition I read was not the one updated by Martin Gardner, with its new introduction, three new chapters and modernised language. We’ll publish them on our site once we’ve reviewed them.

The author does indeed present the subj This was a book that I skimmed through, rather than thoroughly digested, not least nad much of each chapter consists of worked examples and exercises which I didn’t attempt.
