Leeis confused and tedious on the page. Mainly because Brown dawdled so before attacking Harpers Ferry and as entertaining a correspondent as Flash is, well there is a lot of sitting about.
Books by George MacDonald Fraser. Flashie stumbles from one fine mess to the next, getting increasingly entangled in the rival plots of the Secret Service, the Abolitionists and the precursor of the Klan and winding up a triple agent for all of them.

I almost put this book down, something I never do, and something that never occurred to me when I was reading the superior “Flash for Th Not only are we subjected to a charming opening with Flashman and his great-grandchildren, but it takes nearly half the book just to get Flashman in the same room as John Brown.
I suggest getting the Audible version with Timothy West narrating. Brown, like Crixus, like Atropos too, lorv a different manner, lives in a world of fantasy. A question about Fraser, more than this novel. Nov 16, Adam rated it liked it Shelves: So much so, that even Fraser, through Flashman, comments on how odd and improbable it is. Again, much of the history is spot on even learned a tye things I intend to look up and verifybut this one felt just a little ghe forced, and Flashy a bit out of character. The periods between Flashman books were growing longer and longer.
Still, after not reading one for a decade or more one gets the urge to revisit old haunts. Refresh and ths again. At the start of the novel, Flashman leaves Calcutta before the wrath of a cuckolded husband can find him. At the time of publication a Flashman fanatics idea of an American adventure was of course his involvement in the American Civil War.
Of course, thanks to GMF’s delightful storytelling, the examination of Flashy’s character is always an enjoyable, rib-tickling experience. Lists with This Book. What makes the narrative interesting and highly enjoyable is Fraser’s portrayal of all the secret societies and characters looming around this incident, and his surprisingly sympathetic portrait of John Brown, whom Flashy seems to have some affection for.
Flashman records the various incidents of his career to demonstrate how out of place his adventure with John Brown was.
